Five Coast FA select teams returned to the Grand Strand with trophies in hand from the fall season’s initial tournament weekend. Six Coast teams enjoyed the cool mountain temperatures in Asheville, North Carolina with two teams receiving awards. Ten Coast teams spent the weekend in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with three walking the podium.
Coach Joel Banta led both the Coast 99 Red and Coast 02 Red to the championship match in the Mens U19 and Mens U16 top divisions. The Coast 99s posted two shutouts and a tie in pool play before winning the championship in a prolonged PK shootout over Highland Football Club. The Coast 02s lost a heartbreaker to Highland Football Club after posting three straight victories in pool play. “My two teams had a great weekend of competition at a very nice venue. This was a perfect tune-up for both teams as their Region III Premier schedule begins next weekend” said Banta.
After an opening 2-2 tie in their first match in Chapel Hill the Coast 06g Red Girls kicked things into high gear. Coach Vinnie De La Cueva’s girls won their next three matches by a combined score of 9-1 and claimed the championship in the top Ladies U12 Division. The victories came against top level clubs Charlotte United, Wake FC and Triangle United.
Coach Brian Smith’s Coast 04 Red went undefeated in U14 top division pool play only to come up just short in the championship match against a superb Charlotte United side. ” The boys played very good soccer all weekend against quality competition. We can build on the results here to help us in our SCSCL league match schedule,” said Coach Smith.
Coach Justin Blomdahl’s Coast 08 Red squad posted three convincing results in the top U10 boys Division but could not find a way to better a tremendous XL Soccer World side to finish as finalists. “They are one of the best young youth soccer teams that you will see anywhere. Playing teams of that caliber will only make us better,” said Director of Coaching Ross Morgan.
