The Coast FA McDonald's Rec League held its opening day matches last Saturday to a record breaking number of families from Horry, Georgetown and Brunswick Counties. Hurricane Florence and the ensuing three weeks of flooding tried its best to delay the season to no avail. Radio station JIOS donated their time and kicked off the season for the kids with a rousing rendition of the Star- Spangled Banner at Socastee Park. This year's fall season saw over 800 kids register which is a twenty percent increase from last year. Coast now has a Saturday match schedule at Stables Park in Pawleys Island, Socastee Park in Socastee and Jesse Mae Elementary School in Brunswick County, N.C. Additional training sites were also added this year at Carolina Forest and Market Commons.
The twenty percent growth in our McDonald's Recreation League did not happen by accident. Our sponsors really stepped up this year which allowed us to send Coach Vinnie De La Cueva and Coach RJ Bass into school and church programs during the daytime hours. The more kids they can reach the larger our rec league and select teams can become. The fact that Neal ”Robbo” Robinson joined our club as our full time Recreation Director has paid huge dividends for Coast. Neal is organized and super committed to youth soccer. He has a great understanding of the game but also a unique set of people skills that has taken the club to another level. We are blessed to have Neal come on full time. Our goal is to one day get everyone else providing youth soccer programs in our community to work with us and establish a local area league. For now we will just keep pushing forward to offer the game to as many kids that wish to play. ” said Coast Director Heyward Gulledge
