Three Coast FA teams qualified for the State Cup Final Four in Florence, South Carolina over the weekend. Two teams fell short of the championship in agonizing fashion to claim finalist trophies.
Coast 07 Red (click here for image) coached by Joel Banta narrowly missed becoming the first Coast FA team to win back to back State Cup championships. After winning it all in 2021 the boys lost a 0-1 heartbreaker in overtime this year to a quality Charleston United side in U16. The 07 Red beat a scrappy Lexington team in the semifinal on Saturday 3-1 before coming up short in the championship. By finishing second, the team will retain their coveted Piedmont National League status for next year. “ We had an amazing year once again. I have been with these young men for the past four seasons and I cannot thank the players and their families enough. Today was our third overtime match in less than a week and we came up just short against a very good United team “ said Coach Banta.
Coast 08g Red (click here for image) coached by Mario Benjamin dropped a 4-3 result in the U15 PMSL State Cup final to James Island. The match was dead even at 3-3 until a crucial referee decision went against us with less than a minute to play. The girls will be promoted to the SCYSA Challenge League next season as a result of finishing second at State Cup. Coach Benjamin said “ these girls gave me everything they had and I am so proud of them. We overcame some real adversity this season and I am very impressed with how they responded. Looking forward to the challenge of being promoted. ”
Coach Mark Sanchez’s Coast 04g Red (click here for image) team finished their youth career placing fourth at this year’s State Cup. “ It has been a true honor coaching these girls. Their commitment, hard work and dedication to the club has brought them one state championship and three other appearances in the final four. They will be remembered as one of the most successful teams in Coast FA history. They will surely be missed and we will certainly see some of them play at the next level “ said Coach Sanchez.
